The Mary Lou Orthey Memorial Scholarship Fund was established in 2006 to promote the development and growth of the autoharp by providing financial assistance to people who would otherwise not be able to afford to come to the Gathering.
The Mary Lou Orthey Memorial Scholarship Committee is pleased to consider your application for assistance to the 2017 Mountain Laurel Autoharp Gathering. Several scholarships will be awarded in 2017. This scholarship may be applied to help with basic registration fees, camping or housing, meals, travel expenses and personal expenses. Please download the application form, review the application process and guidelines, and complete the application. The application deadline is April 1, 2017.
Your application will be kept strictly confidential. Please note that we will not publish your name as a recipient unless you grant us permission to do so.
We enlist all members of the autoharp community to encourage deserving candidates they know personally, to apply for this scholarship.

FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
“How much may I request? Is there a limit? “Will my application be considered if I’m asking for too much?”
Use the online registration information at www.mlag.org/mlagreg.html to help you estimate your need. Ask yourself what you are able to pay for general expenses, and then request the amount you would actually need in order to attend. While there is generally no stated limit, in the past the amount depends on how many are selected each year and available funds. Historically, past awards usually vary from $50 to $300 with the average probably $200-250.
All applications are considered. Since the amount of an award is not fixed and may differ among recipients, travel expenses are often the variable. The scholarship committee considers each application thoughtfully, yet also has to be guided by available funding. If more financial assistance is requested than we can provide and we want you to be a scholarship recipient, we can explore some possibilities with you.
“Can I include a request for the pre-Gathering workshops too?”
No, the Mary Lou Orthey Memorial Scholarship Fund doesn’t cover pre-Gathering classes. Read about the Patsy Tressler Memorial Award on the main registration page. It’s an exciting award available this year for the pre-Gathering classes.
"Can my application include financial assistance for my spouse?"
No…….only in those indirect ways such as sharing your tent site/ housing and driving expenses. Our guidelines don’t exclude a spouse from their own Scholarship request unless they are ineligible.
“What travel expenses qualify for requests?”
Recipients have received assistance for gas, carpooling expenses, support for mass transit tickets, toll fees and other related expenses that occur during travel.
"Can I apply if I've attended before?" “ I wasn’t selected last year, can I reapply?”
Yes to both.
"What if miss the deadline?"
Unfortunately, it’s too late. We usually begin the selection process the next day.
“How many recipients are selected?”
We honestly can’t say until we review the applications and available funding. One year there may be four selected and another year, only one. If you long to attend the Gathering and some financial help will make that possible, apply…..today.
“Will I be contacted if I don’t receive a scholarship?” “How soon will I know if I am selected?”
Recipients and all we’re not able to fund this year will be contacted before the end of May. We aim to contact you by email, phone or letter by mid April in time to complete your registration process.
“Am I expected to do something onstage at the Gathering if I get a scholarship?”
Not unless it’s your choice. (Open Stage, Competition, etc.) With your permission, you may be asked to stand and be recognized as a scholarship recipient during our opening gathering.
“What happens if I am chosen and then can’t go after all?”
If circumstances change for you, let us know. We may have an alternate in mind from the application and review process.
